The (in)famous lost post

The (in)famous lost post

I wrote about this before when I lost a post I wrote on the train while connected through my phone, the connection dropped, lost the page and couldn’t recover it even using the handy blooger recover tool, kind of annoyed me as it was a good list of things that annoyed or frustrated me compounded by the fact I lost it due to one of the very things that annoy me!

Then I wrote it again this morning on the train down but this time did it in Notepad, however I forgot to save it as was doing other things and then we arrived at Kings Cross so I logged off and Notepad popped up asking if I wanted to save the file which if course I did, however before I got the chance to click on Save the machine logged off and the post was lost again, so that’s twice I lost it.

So in the office I wrote a post about losing it again much like this one, I’m on a fixed connection so figured no problem here to leave it unsaved while I took a meeting, little did I know that someone would come along and unplug my network connection so they could use it, consequently losing again, so that’s three times !

Before I left I went on to Blogger to see if I could recover the post, no surprise I couldn’t, in fact I have never been able to use it so have no clue how it’s supposed to work, but for me it plainly doesn’t, however I spotted the new Blogger Word toolbar allowing you to write posts in Word and then publish or save to draft which sounded ideal for a nomadic, periodically offline person like me so here I am trying it out.

I have a connection on my Nokia 6680 which is stable for now but when I tried to ‘login’ to use the toolbar I got a timeout, no surprise there then, waiting to see what happens when I save as a draft and then try to publish through this, depending on how well it works it may solve my problems but I am worried about formatting as it may be as bad as when I tried mailing posts in from offline mails and there is the fact that my post template isn’t available here for things like Technorati tags and font etc, we’ll see.

Hmm, so I can’t save as a draft when the connection isn’t working, get a timeout error and rather than let me save locally (which one of the options seems to indicate) I get asked to supply blog name which of course I can’t as not connected! Not looking so good for offline posting so far, maybe the fact my laptop thinks it has a valid connection is the problem…. At least I can save this as a standard word doc and try later on a decent (working) connection

I can browse the web using this connection so it isn’t that bad, must be the toolbar, damn!

Another update, clicking on the help URL in the about box for the toolbar takes you to a document not found page on Blogger !
