Mobile Adapted sites

Another new 'mobile friendly' version of a popular onlne site just got released by Technorati surpirsingly enough called ..... Technorati Mobile !

I've tried it on a few devices and it works well just like the previously mentioned Bloglines Mobile, the formatting is good and fits screens well, if you use Technorati a lot then it's a great service.

What interests me is that in my job we have looked at this for a long time, basically taking a succesful online service and just making a mobile version, over the years we came to believe that this was simply not enough and that there had to be more to it than a simple redesign to allow for smaller screens, this has been driven a lot by the 'requirement' to provide converged services across fixed internet and mobile.

I have worked with our sister team who do a similar role on the ISP side to look at how we make a better product through convergence (thru subvergence) by recognising the strengths of each platform whilst being very aware of the idiosyncrasies of both, basically this means most of the heavy lifting occurs in the backend which suits us in our drive for converged products to take advantage of being an integrated operator.

Then along comes these simple mobile formatted services that prove that if the site works well in the web and is not invloving heavy duty content then it can be easily made mobile and useful to those that must get a fix when not able to get to a fixed or wifi connection, is there a business case specifically for the mobile part, No ! We still get the data revenue with Zero effort and is more sites like this get popular then all the better. These sites are simply more examples of leading edge web 2.0 type companies understanding that if you make free and good value added services you help promote your main activity which is where the money is made.

Much to be learnt in this area still I feel and much to get people educated on
