The Trouble with technology today

So I just got a new 26" LCD TV which I am very happy with, I am amazed at the sheer number of connections on the back (well bottom) that shows how diverse the needs of the digital home are, now I have far too may choices on what is the best way to hook everything up which a few years back I would have loved but my first thought now is "for gods sake now I have to look up what's best and what works well with what and I just don't have time for that!"

I am starting to feel that if there was less choice then the decision would be easier and I could live with that, I guess it's getting old, married, paternal that does this to you as 10 years ago I would have LOVED to have this choice and decision to make, it does make me wonder how the current generations as they stand are really going to deal with the oft times overwhelming deluge of new technical choice, give this TV to my Dad and he would freak but my 2 year old will view it as a relic in the same way that I consider the old Zanussi TV I spent many hours watching when younger a relic now.

I still live near the edge but a few steps back from the bloody red bit except for the odd occasion when I simply cant help myself but the thing about doing that is that it usually hurts (£570 for a multi region by solder DVD player that played production DVDs only anyone - I guess i could ebay it for a tenner now though)

I think the work that I do has meant that as I understand (at least think I do) what is happening in this new digital era we live in (where even our government wants to lauch a blog to get the public view on how digital can help) means that I am ever more reluctant to dive in on a new technology because I know or assume that something better is coming, a recent example being the fact that I went to the states firmly intent on buying a new iPod mini 6GB to replace my current 4GB since the battery life was longer - (something I really need) but just before I left I read a post on gizmodo about the possibility of a 54 hour battery life soon so of course I held off.

The question then becomes how long do you hold off ? until it's released when it will be new and expensive or wait that bit longer (piece of string come to mind?) until the price comes down a bit ! There must be a graph that can map out when the sweet spot is to buy new technology i.e:

  • map feature
  • against requirements
  • against price
  • against desirability
  • against early adopter status (first to have)
  • against future compatability
need to dig out some graphics tools perhaps, assuming I can be bothered to use some precious time to do that ;)
