- Pay for wifi access with Attingo
- Dialup over GPRS
First off the M600 I'm using has no bluetooth drivers so thought I'd give iPass a go over standard Ir Modem as not used it for a while and it does offer a Toll Free number (only after did I realise I am roaming so that doesn't matter - i think !)
Connected fine which was a surprise and started getting a new phonebook file, this takes a while, I was in mid sync when I got a call which I had to take so it destroyed the connection and all was lost, I really should have just paid for WiFi or just not used IR, let's face it serves me right for using 'old' tech but the irony is that it was the best option at this point
Anyway the interesting thing, and the only reason to really post this, is that I was told a long time ago that the WiFi access through iPass was really good but damned if I can ever find an access point that is listed, so I'm in the queue to board which is really long even though it's the priority queue (I have a gold card) and I get chatting to the guy stood next to me..
"this queue is way too long"
"yea but what the hell it's a long flight"
"so what you doing when you get there?"
etc
and it turns out he works for iPass and is going to a sales conference, I get to telling him about how poor my experience is and he proceeds to tell me what the experience is on the current client and I am really pissed off that I don't get this experience. He tells me that it is either that Orange has decided not to pay for the full service (most likely) or that I just have a very old client (also very likely given the out of date nature of apps delivered to me) so I check the app version on this machine and my phonebook dates back to Aug 2003! this is even though I have seen updates going through so something is very wrong. Very helpfully he has offered to help me resolve this so we exchanged business cards, looking forward to getting the full experience as it will be really helpful while travelling, especially as if all goes to plan I will be able to view available wifi networks and the one's I can use for free with iPass will have a small red icon next to them!
More to come later when I actually get a fix perhaps...
